After a lifetime of involvement in boxing and athletics, I found myself suffering
from stiff joints and a serious back problem. I did the rounds of GPs, chiropractors, physiotherapists and osteopaths; none
of which seems to alleviate the aches and pains. As things got worse I realised that if ever I needed a miracle, it was now.
I didn't find a miracle but I did find Pilates - which for me has almost amounted to the same thing.
I was initially referred to Anne Marie who quickly started to show me the ropes. At first I was very tentative and
a bit sceptical, as it was so different from the type of exercise regime which I had always practised. The thought also crossed
my mind "should I be diversifying like this at almost 50 years of age?" From the start Anne Marie's patience
and instructional methods were absolutely top drawer and in a matter of weeks I found myself both absorbed and enlightened
by her teachings.
After 12 months of one-to-one instruction Anne Marie then assigned me to
Claire to continue with mat work as part of a class. Again I was totally impressed with the standard of tutelage.
So, here I am, almost 2 years down the line; the stiff joints are now supple, the muscles feel strong and toned but
the back problem persists. A recent MRI scan has revealed a spinal condition which will require surgery. In the last few weeks
two specialists who I have consulted have been surprised that I am more mobile than most people of my age and they have agreed
that it is due to my daily Pilates routine.
Finally, this spinal operation will come and
go, but for me Pilates is the way ahead and I shall remain committed for life. I sincerely hope that Anne Marie and Claire
will continue as my instructors.
